Tower is on a mission to deliver beautifully simple and rewarding experiences our customers rave about, and our people are key to helping us bring this to life. After heading along to a networking event hosted by the University of Auckland, George Wu started interning with Tower in November 2021. In April 2022, he stepped into the permanent role of Integration Engineer. We spoke to George about his experience so far and his decision behind joining Tower.

Tower Integration Engineer George Wu

What did you study at university?

I completed a Master of Information Technology at the University of Auckland, which is a combination of computer science, information system and soft skills.

What was the most interesting / valuable thing you learnt at university?

I found the technical part of my study most interesting. I think the distributed algorithms I learned from the university are the most valuable thing which helped get me started in the distributed system field.

What appealed to you about joining Tower?

Many things! Tower has an incredible company culture and notable technical maturity. It has many areas for me to grow my tech stack, and the size of the organisation will enable me to develop my skill of building scalable software.

How did you hear about the Tower internship/what was the internship selection process like?

I met Tower at a speed networking event held by the University of Auckland. The selection process was incredibly straightforward; we talked and decided if we were a match.

What was your favourite part of your internship?

I have a lot of happy memories. Researching, coding, networking and joining after work events – to name a few. I can’t tell which exact part was my favourite as I enjoyed the whole experience.

What does your current role entail?

My current role is Integration Engineer, which mainly involves design and development of backend services using Java and C#. I also have responsibility in managing the SharePoint flows using Power Automate.

What interests you about this field?

As a full-stack developer, backend is my relative weak spot so I would like to strengthen it a little bit more and see this role as a great opportunity to do so.

What has been the biggest thing you’ve learnt?

Besides the technicalities I would have naturally learnt along the way, the biggest lesson I learnt is how to effectively collaborate with colleagues.

What has been the biggest challenge?

Tower is my first experience working for a company in an English-speaking country. So, the most challenging part is learning the office skills in a brand-new culture.

What’s your advice for others who are keen to do an internship / get into a grad program?

Don’t limit yourself to the scope of the internship project, get to know the company, the process, people from other teams, etc. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
