Augmented Reality Treasure Hunt is a four day treasure hunt for primary school classrooms. It has been designed as a mathematics unit for Year 5 to 8 classes that introduces teachers, students and parents to augmented reality and how it can be used to enhance learning.

Students “wrk tgthr to decphr th clus + wrk out th cds 2 fnd +reasur” Within the augmented reality are clues and codes to find and decipher. Unlock the messages each day then use them to find the treasure on the fourth day.

It has been designed to be part of a mathematics programme and focuses on understanding and using place value. It also contributes to the development of the key 21st century competencies of problem solving, resourcefulness, resilience, and collaboration.

Each day many clues and codes need to be found and deciphered; some easy and some difficult. By working collaboratively for approximately 20 to 30 minutes each day we anticipate the day’s message will be uncovered. Groups of students and younger students are welcome to take part. Teams of adults or a family are also welcome to take part; select a leader to act as the teacher and enjoy the challenge.

Planning for this activity has been completed for teachers except for one task needed for the fourth day. During the first three days the teacher joins in with their class as a learner and code breaker. Teachers need to register for this event. Notes and instructions will be send to each teacher before the start of Techweek.

To take part teachers or students need access to at least one newer Apple mobile device, i.e. an iPhone 6s or newer or an iPad with iOS 11.0 or later. To take part is free however the Augmented Reality Treasure Hunt app needs to be downloaded from Apple’s App Store at a cost of $4.49 NZ.

Augmented Reality Treasure Hunt is part of New Zealand's Techweek'18.
