What's it all about?

Using liquid nitrogen (think doctor's room and skin treatment; or cryopreservation), we carefully store Aotearoa's fungi and bacteria for research and industrial purposes - and keep them alive for decades.

How cold is -196C?  Learn about part of our science equipment bought at Pak n Save!

Ask how we can securely store cultures of mushrooms, yeasts, moulds, and other micro-organisms for your edible mushroom cultivation, brewing hobby, or biotech industry.

We are custodians of the national culture collection ICMP of living fungi and plant associated bacteria, with 20,000 living strains held under liquid nitrogen. Our primary purpose is to undertake and support research. This includes supply of strains for various research agencies as well as industries, and safe storage of strains for those using these organisms for applied purpose. Our holdings are about 60% NZ, 40% overseas in origin.

The proposed event is to showcase this national resource for the primary sector, food & beverage industries, and entrepreneurs where fungi or bacteria are involved. We will display the ICMP Culture Collection using photos, videos, examples of equipment, and live cultures of fungi and bacteria at a venue in conjunction with the University of Auckland. We will also offer on-line presentations at designated times during the 3 scheduled days, and provide a question & answer session.
