Many of us grew up with the opportunity to get out and learn to drive in old cars on empty roads. Mistakes were made of course, but we usually escaped with a near miss or a few minor scrapes. That situation no longer exists for most youth but we are still faced with the reality that driving skill only comes from driving practice.
With a well-designed, simulated driving program we can deliver the equivalent of real-world driving experiences without real road consequences.
Some statistics:
70% of jobs require a driver’s license even if no tasks involve driving (Shaw & Cates 2014)
Young drivers are;
600% - 800% more likely to crash than our safest drivers (MCT Young Drivers Report 2015)
40% of Learner drivers wait up to five years before taking the next test and 50% Restricted getting a full license can take 10 years.
84% of youth breach their learner or restricted license conditions (Brookland & Begg 2014).
Barriers to learning:
Anxiety
Remoteness
Lack of confidence
Fear of failure
Access to a vehicle
Gearing taught outdated knowledge or bad habits
The expense of professional driving lessons and tests
