Overcoming barriers to learning and upskilling

This Techweek22 event is brought to you by the Digital Boost Alliance, a partnership between public and private sector organisations focused on motivating and inspiring small businesses, individuals, and communities across New Zealand to lift their use of digital technologies. Each Alliance member has committed to providing free, subsidised or discounted offers or services to help Kiwis succeed in their digital journey. View The Mind Lab's commitments here.

What is holding people back from learning? Research shows that Aotearoa New Zealand has a skills gap and people are reluctant to upskill or to 'go back to study'. Coupled with inflation, busy lifestyles and for some, bad experiences in school or traditional education – there are many barriers to lifelong learning.

The Mind Lab does things differently and is leading the way in innovative education for adults. In this Q&A session, Digital Boost host Anamari Fanthorpe chats with Bex Taylor who not only works for The Mind Lab but has also studied with them, recently completing the Leading Beyond Sustainability micro-credential, an 8-week short course done part-time alongside her full-time job.

In this webinar event, Bex Taylor chats about five of the barriers to upskilling: money, time, no prior education, fear of learning and lack of community and what can be done to overcome those barriers. Because when the greatest certainty is change, lifelong learning is key.
