SaaS for the masses: Growing SaaS businesses to transform the economy

This Techweek22 event is brought to you by the Digital Boost Alliance, a partnership between public and private sector organisations focused on motivating and inspiring small businesses, individuals, and communities across New Zealand to lift their use of digital technologies. Each Alliance member has committed to providing free, subsidised or discounted offers or services to help Kiwis succeed in their digital journey. View Microsoft's commitments here.

New Zealand’s Software as a Service, or SaaS, sector is growing fast. According to Callaghan Innovation, it has an average revenue growth rate of 17 per cent – twice the global rate. Success stories such as Xero, PushPay, Seequent, Unleashed and Timely have proven the global viability of our SaaS sector.

Yet many other SaaS businesses are finding achieving scale a challenge. It’s also difficult to determine exactly how big the sector is, or just what our country’s SaaS capabilities are, as the SaaS sector is not distinguished from the broader IT industry. That makes it particularly challenging for those wanting to attract top talent into their businesses, or to sell Aotearoa’s achievements to the world.

Former Trade Commissioner to Singapore and co-author of the SaaS Strategy for the new Digital Technologies Industry Transformation Plan, Hayley Horan, recently joined Microsoft New Zealand as SaaS Partner Lead. She will discuss the current state of SaaS in New Zealand and why building a strong, vocal SaaS community will be transformative not only for individual businesses, but for the broader economy.

Hayley will also provide her observations on what New Zealand SaaS businesses do well (or need to improve at), and what they can do to scale up on the world stage, transforming from local players to global titans. That includes those traditional software businesses looking to change to a SaaS model. The discussion will also include insights into Hayley’s vision for the future of SaaS in New Zealand, success stories other businesses could learn from, and the exciting opportunities ahead for the sector.
