The Future of Deep-Tech

Breakthrough scientific innovations from New Zealand are putting the country on a global stage. Hear from a panel of some of NZ's future deep-tech leaders who will talk about technology trends, new exciting companies, and how they think NZ's deep-tech landscape will evolve over the next decade.

The panelists include TJ Laurino, Investment Analyst at WNT Ventures, Celeste Peh, Technology Incubator Product Owner, and Jess Chiang, Chief Scientific Officer at biotech startup, BioFab. From scientific breakthroughs coming out of our universities and to frontier technology going through incubation, their combined expertise spans across both public and private sector commercialisation of complex technologies. The panel will be moderated by Carl Jones.

TJ Laurino

Investment Analyst - WNT Ventures

TJ is an investment analyst at WNT Ventures where she provides deep market and business intelligence into breakthrough technologies. Trained as a medical scientist, she enjoys learning about complex innovations, and her background in market validation allows her to discover commercial opportunities using a customer-first, data-driven approach. TJ’s experience at WNT, working across Fund II, and III gives her deep insight into where markets are ripe for change and what technological trends underpin the next decade of innovation.

Besides being a PhD student at the University of Auckland, Jess is the chair of the Auckland Momentum Investment Committee as well as the founding team member and Chief Science Officer at a biotech start-up, BioFab. As a biotechnologist who sits right in the middle of the intersection where academia and industries meet, she supports and values multiple aspects of efforts put in to transform research or ideas into real life. She is passionate about coming up with new solutions that can solve pressing environmental issues.

Technology Incubator Product Owner - Callaghan Innovation

Celeste is passionate about innovation and research commercialisation. Her current role involves managing the $100M Technology Incubator program at Callaghan Innovation where she can support in growing the number of early-stage and high-risk ventures, and the commercialisation of deep tech start-ups in New Zealand. Her background is in Biomedical Science and Master in Bioscience Enterprise. Prior to this, Celeste was in the biotech start-up space where she led the innovation and product development function for a venture that is now listed on the NZX.
