TWTV: Iwi Data Discovery - using data to discover stories of the past

The Iwi Data Discovery project seeks to support data sovereignty, and open access to data that pertains to Māori, iwi, and eventually other cultural groups that need tools to search for data about them, and their history.

The project is co-designed by Te Atiawa and Tūwharetoa who are spearheading this project, working with Callaghan Innovation’s Data Science team. This project is being entirely led by the iwi involved, who are deciding what data they would like to develop the products to find and are being supported by Callaghan Innovation’s data scientists to build the technology in how to find this data.

The tools being developed are new mātauranga for Māori, and eventually the project hopes to open the tool up for all Māori to have access to and shape their own ontologies specific to their whānau, hapū and iwi.

Join those involved in the project to hear more about the innovative platform, and how it will enable Māori organisations to search for data and stories that relate to them with datasets that they already own, or that other agencies use to store Māori data within. Also hear more about the collaboration between iwi and scientists, demonstrating the opportunities presented when Māori lead a project in collaboration with Crown agencies.
